What Exactly Happens at a Fertility Check-Up?
We start by listening. Before prescribing any tests, Dr. Priya will review your periods, your medical history, and any previous treatments you have tried. Because fertility involves both partners, both of you need to be evaluated to get the full picture.
For Women: Checking Your Eggs, Uterus, and Tubes
We need to know three things: do you have healthy eggs, is the pathway open, and is your uterus ready to carry a baby?
- Are my eggs okay? (Ovarian Reserve Testing): We check your AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) and FSH levels through a simple blood test. This tells us how many eggs you have remaining and if your body is ovulating properly.
- Is my uterus healthy? (Pelvic Ultrasound): A specialized scan checks the lining of your uterus and your ovaries. We look for hidden physical roadblocks like fibroids, cysts, or polyps that could stop an embryo from implanting.
- Are my tubes blocked? (Tubal Patency Test/HSG): The egg and sperm meet in the fallopian tubes. If they are blocked by scar tissue, natural conception or simple treatments like IUI will not work. We run a quick fluid test to ensure the pathway is completely clear.
For Men: Does the Sperm Have What It Takes?
Male fertility factors are responsible for roughly 50% of conception struggles. A male evaluation is non-negotiable, fast, and painless.
- Is the sperm the issue? (Semen Analysis): This simple lab test gives us half the puzzle. We check the sperm count (are there enough?), the motility (are they swimming forward fast enough to reach the egg?), and the morphology (are they shaped correctly to penetrate the egg?).
- What if the numbers are low? If the initial test shows an issue, we run secondary hormone blood tests or an ultrasound to find out why the numbers are low and how to fix it.
